Finally got my Jeep Grand Cherokee repaired. I found a local Chrysler dealership. This was a journey because the first visit to the dealership ended with, we can’t find anything wrong”. The same thing happened with a trip to a second mechanic. Nobody acknowledged the Jeep had an issue until after I did research and suggested it might be a failed rocker arm. After suggesting that and taking it back, the second mechanic acknowledged the issue as being a lifter. That’s related to the rocker arms. But said he wouldn’t do the work. He didn’t have the necessary equipment and manpower to do that job at his shop.

I returned to the Chrysler dealership. Now they seem to know the issue. They took a while, but finally did a full diagnostic and confirmed I had a failed rocker arm, lifter, and camshaft. They replaced all lifters, rockers and damaged camshafts. I came out paying a little over $2,800. Cheaper than a new car.

Now to dig into the delayed starting and turning over when cranking. I didn’t think that was related to the knocking noise. But I had hoped it would go away with this repair. No such luck. Well, at least the knocking noise has stopped. Time to start learning about the starter mechanism.
